With several team’s seasons already underway, the ball is beginning to roll on Spring sports at West Jessamine. Here is a look at some of the teams and sports commencing at West Jessamine in Spring 2013.
Baseball
The West baseball team
opened up in a Tuesday, March 19 matchup vs. Casey County, which resulted in an
18-0 rout of Casey County and the first win on the season for the baseball
colts.
Led by Coach Jody
Hamilton, the team has their sights set on this year’s state championship. “I believe that we have a great chance to
make it to state. Our defense is solid,
but we have to be productive on the offensive end. We worked hard all winter long, so I hope we
can live up to our expectations this year and go all the way.” says Sophomore
Shortstop, Josh Blancet.
The
Colts are 1-1 on the young season and will continue to play throughout the next
few months, with the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State tournament
scheduled for June 3-8.
The Colts baseball team has their sights set on the 2013
State Championship, last year hosted by Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Track
The West track team hit
the ground running, quite literally, on Saturday, March 16 in a meet at Eastern
Kentucky University. The team competed
in several events including the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, shot-put, high
jump, and more, and posted impressive results placing high out of the eight
teams at the meet.
Led
by Coach Heath Crist, the team has high hopes for the season, especially with
2012 State Championship hurdler, Abby Wiggins, returning to the team this year
for her senior season.
“Our team this year at
West is a pretty solid team. The chances
we have at beating and competing against other schools in Kentucky are pretty
good considering we have a lot of hardworking, talented individuals that strive
for success,” says team member Fabian Leon, “I know that everyone on the team
is looking to better themselves as individuals and as competitors.”
Tennis
The West girls’ tennis
team opened up their season at home vs. East Jessamine on Tuesday, March 19th,
which resulted in a win for the girls’ team.
Led by Coach Kate McKenzie, the Colts have high hopes for their Spring
2013 season.
The West boys’ tennis
team produced their first win vs. East Jessamine on Friday, March 15th. Coached by Josh Yost and led by senior
players Grant Wells and Andrew Monell, the boys Tennis team also has high
expectations for this season. “We lost
some key players this year especially in Logan Sparks, so our players will have
to step up to win some crucial matches.
All in all, we are excited to see what the rest of the season has in
store for us.” says player Gentry Fitch.
Football
The West Jessamine
football colts have been hard at work in the offseason in preparation for the
2013 season, beginning next fall.
Despite a disappointing 2012 season, the team has shown high moral in
their offseason workouts led by new head coach Yancey Marcum. With biweekly morning speed and agility training sessions and after-school strength training, the Colts have worked diligently to whip themselves into shape for Spring ball, arriving in just two weeks.
If you are thinking about or interested in joining the team, now is the time. Mandatory afternoon workouts are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4-5:15 after school in the weight room, and optional but recommended speed and agility training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 before school in the gym.
